What to Wear for Fall Family Photos

Family photos at Tangelwood Park

Hey friends! I am Morgan of Morgan Faulds Photography, and this is my very first blog post! I have been honored to serve families in Winston Salem, NC and the surrounding areas for the last 3(ish) years as a family, newborn, maternity, and senior photographer. Today I want to write a little bit about what to wear to your FALL family session.

So you have booked a photo session! Yay! You’re so excited to get those sweet new family photos and have a great time with a photographer you’re excited to work with (Me, of course!! 😄) You go to your closet, and, if you’re like me, you stand back to look at your options, rifle through the shirts and dresses, and begin to feel a little defeated about what you see. Having 4 kids in 7 years put my body through a LOT, and it can be difficult to keep clothing that both fits well and is flattering! It can be seriously overwhelming finding something to wear for a family session and coordinate with your family. Well, I am here to help! This blog post will include links to specific items that I love, info on how to have interest in your outfits without being too matchy matchy, and color pallets that work best with my style of photography and have a little hint of Fall.

1-Choose Mom’s Outfit First

My number one recommendation for starting to plan your outfits for your family session is to choose Mom’s outfit first. Typically (and there are exceptions to this, of course) women are a bit more picky with what we are wearing. There are so many materials and styles to choose from for women, and there are materials that work for some and do not work for others. Most of the time, dresses made of polyester or cotton that have smocked bodices are flattering. Even if not polyester, another material that glides over the body instead of clinging is much more flattering at all angles than something that you have to constantly pull away from your body and adjust. The last thing you need on the day of family photos is to be worrying about your dress or shirt sticking to you or emphasizing the areas you want disguised. My goal is for your session to be relaxed and fun! Here are a few dresses I LOVE at several different price ranges.

2- Coordinate Your Family’s Outfits

So now you have mom’s outfit chosen. Your next step is to choose dad’s outfits and the kids. What I don’t recommend is for everyone to match. Let your kids individuality come through in your family photos. Now, I don’t mean everyone looks put together in coordinating clothes and then one kid is wearing his favorite Cars Tshirt. lol But I do mean, if your little girl just looooves twirly dresses or fluffy tulle, let her wear it as long as it coordinates with your families color scheme!

Instead of having everyone choose an exact pattern or 2 colors options for your whole outfit, let’s choose a color pallet that you love and work around that. Using that color pallet, I would do 2 subtle patterns max, and stick with solids with texture for the rest of the family. In my experience, the more simple the outfits, the easier it is for your eye to rest on what is actually going on in the photos. If the patterns or color schemes are too bright, it can be distracting and difficult for your eye to know what to rest on.

3- Add Texture

One great way to add interest to your outfits without adding in too many different patterns and colors is to add texture. Since it is typically cooler for Fall photos, you have a few great options. Corduroy skirts, Slouchy Sweaters, Pullover sweater, Cardigans, tights for the girls, a thicker flannel material shirt for dad with khakis or jeans… there are so many options that will help make your outfits stand out without having to add in too many patterns.

5- Style Boards

So now, I want to show you exactly what I mean! I know you probably get it, but sometimes we still need to see examples to be able to truly visualize what we want to replicate!
